The glacier began to melt on the island of Iceland, September 2017

Like many glaciers in Iceland, there are several volcanoes and volcanic lakes beneath the glacier Vatnayöküdl. Several glacial lakes feed the glacier. It occupies 8,133 km² or 8% of the area of the island of Iceland. It is the third on the territory (after the glacier of the North Island (Novaya Zemlya, Russia, area-20500 km²) and the glacier Austfonna (the Spitsbergen archipelago, Norway, the area is about 8,492 km²), and by volume is the largest in Europe -3,100 cubic km.

The reason for the melting of the Vatnajökull glacier is not known, but scientists suggest that one of the reasons is the change in climatic conditions on Earth.

The glacier is like a dome-dam restrains inside an enormous glacial lake, and when melting, as a consequence, flooding in Iceland and volcanic eruptions.

«Global climate change is already influencing health, living conditions, and sustenance of people on all the continents of the Earth. The observed increase in the growth of dynamics of global cataclysms indicates that in the coming decades they will lead to catastrophic consequences of the global scale for the civilization as a whole and to victims and destructions unprecedented in the history of mankind. .» (From the scientific report of the Allatra SCIENCE community of scientists on the problems and consequences of global climate change on Earth.Effective ways to solve these problems « )
